How it works

ROI (Return on Investment) measures the gain of an investment relative to what it cost. It's calculated as (Net gain / Initial investment) × 100. Net gain is what you get back at the end, minus the initial investment and minus any additional costs (fees, management expenses, transaction taxes...) you enter.

Total ROI vs. annualized ROI

Total ROI doesn't account for how long the money was invested. Two investments with the same total ROI can be very different if one took 1 year and the other 10. Annualized ROI spreads that gain proportionally over time (using the compound growth formula), so it's the right way to compare investments of different durations.

Frequently asked questions

How is ROI calculated?

ROI = (Net gain / Initial investment) × 100. Net gain is the final value you get back, minus the initial investment and minus any additional costs (fees, management expenses...) if you enter them.

What is annualized ROI?

It's the average return per year, useful for comparing investments of different durations. A 50% total ROI over 5 years isn't the same as 50% in 1 year — the annualized figure makes that clear. It's only calculated if you enter the period in years.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. All calculation happens in your browser. No data you enter is transmitted anywhere.

Does it include taxes on the gain?

No. Capital gains taxes vary a lot by country and investment type, so this calculator shows the gross return, before taxes.
